Amazon will allow employees to work from home for an indefinite period of time
Several hundred thousand tech and corporate workers will be permitted to continue working remotely indefinitely, provided they are able to commute to the office when necessary, according to an announcement made Monday by Amazon.
A blog post announcing the new policy notes that Amazon had previously anticipated that most employees would be required to be in the office at least three days a week when offices resumed operations following the COVID-19 pandemic in January.
According to the Seattle Times, the message sent on Monday was signed by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and stated that company directors will have discretion to allow teams under their supervision to continue to work remotely.
In his blog post, Jassy predicts that some teams will continue to work primarily from home, while others will work a combination of remotely and in the office, and still others will decide that their customers will be best served by having the team work primarily in the office.
The majority of the company's more than 1 million global employees are unable to work from home because they perform their duties in the company's fulfillment and transportation division, which is responsible for picking up orders and delivering them to customers around the world.
About 50,000 tech and office employees work at the company's sprawling headquarters campus in downtown Seattle and in the city's South Lake Union neighborhood, according to the company. Their absence will have a negative impact on local restaurants and other businesses.
Amazon's revision to its return-to-work policy came in the wake of similar changes implemented by other major technology companies. Microsoft announced last month that it would be delaying the reopening of its offices indefinitely due to the ongoing government shutdown.
