Interior designers are used to making spaces beautiful.
But now they're getting familiar with a new territory, planning for the post-pandemic home.
Among the changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, one of the most prevalent being the mass movement to work from home, interior designers like Joy Moyler are now fielding requests from clients that may have seemed unusual pre-pandemic.
Moyler has designed for luminaries including Leo DiCaprio and John Mayer, and she told Business Insider that requests for the working-from-home age are flooding in. With more time spent at home, a pause on travel, and a new digital-office dynamic, Moyler says new kinds of client requests are on the rise.
Paving the way to the post-pandemic home, here are three things you can do to ready your space for the new age.
1. Get a good desk chair
"Clients are requesting more functional desk chairs, as they are actually working from home," Moyler said.
"The decorative, pretty chair is not doing the job for eight hour-plus use. Functional chairs like those produced by Herman Miller, chairs with ergonomic applications are desired. Extended comfort is key."
2. Consider new accommodations for guests
"Strangely, a couple of clients want bunk beds installed. With fewer family vacations, the thought is more
extended family will be spending vacation time visiting," Moyler said.
"No one wants an air mattress, or to share a bed with grandma. Besides, with beautiful linen, bunk beds don't feel childish. I call top bunk!"
3. Amplify your holiday prep
Moyler said she is already being asked to provide more "extravagant" flatware and holiday decorations "which are more extravagant than usual," Moyler said.
"Resort vacations are on hold, so clients want to really celebrate big at home this year since that's where they will likely bringing in the New Year. Disco ball, anyone?"
