Welcome to the first Android Apps Weekly of 2018! It’s also the 225th edition. Here are the headlines from the last week:
- Google is working on two new G Suite projects. The first is a database with employee information. It lets managers deal with employee data and other such things. It seems to be much like Microsoft’s Active Directory software. The second is a business-centric VoIP service. We imagine that it’s similar to Google Hangouts, but for business. Both projects might see releases in 2018, according to reports.
- Dashlane made some big claims this week. They plan on killing the text password. They call it Project Mirror. Basically, it just works better at managing your online passwords. Thus, it’s probably not going to kill the text password. In any case, this seems like a major league update coming to the service soon. It’s already one of the most popular password manager apps available.
- Spotify may see an IPO in 2018. Some reports suggest an early 2018 date for the IPO. That means it may happen sooner rather than later. Spotify reportedly filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This is what sparked the rumors. The company recently announced 70 million paid subscribers. That’s bigger than everybody else. An IPO may be a good idea for the company.
- Tencent announced a new Attack on Titan game this week. Attack on Titan – Dedicate Your Heart should hit Asian countries first with a worldwide release later on. Tencent is the developer or publisher of League of Legends, Arena of Valor, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, Fortnite, the Candy Crush games, and the Clash games (Clash of Clans and Clash Royale). That gives them a rather impressive pedigree. Hit the link for early registration and more info!
- The Amazon and YouTube problem got worse this week. Google officially pulled support for Amazon Fire media devices as well as the Echo Show. There are ways around it such as a browser. However, this is not an ideal solution. Amazon expressed disappointment, but claims that talks are still ongoing. Until then, Amazon Fire customers are without an official YouTube app.

Geometry Dash SubZero is a new rhythm platformer game from the acclaimed franchise. It works like most games in the series. You jump around, avoid various obstacles, and do it to a fun and upbeat soundtrack. The game features three levels, unlockable icons, a practice mode, and a challenge mode. Perhaps its best feature is the price tag. It's entirely free with no in-app purchases. There are some ads, though, but they're not a big deal.
Upthere Home is a new cloud storage app from Western Digital (the hard drive company). It works similarly to most cloud storage platforms. You upload files, photos, videos, or whatever. They are accessible from the cloud. The service offers a decent search function, social media sharing, auto-uploading from your device (for photos and videos), and more. Upthere Home has one storage plan. It's $1.99 per month for 100GB of storage. That's on par with what most competitors offer.
Vignettes is a unique little puzzle game from Noodlecake Studios. This one features a bunch of spinning objects. You rotate the objects around until they create other objects. That's basically it. There are several scenarios to play through, simple graphics, and it's family friendly. It's also quite colorful. The game goes for $2.99 with no in-app purchases or advertising. It probably won't be the next hit game, but it's also not terrible.
UC Browser Mini for Android Go is what the name says. It's a smaller, lighter version of the popular UC Browser specifically for Android Go devices. However, anyone can install the app, not just Android Go devices. It has a few features, including the usual browser stuff, a news menu, a quick search, incognito browsing, a night mode, gesture controls, and more. There is a lot to like about this browser, but we're unsure how it stacks up to other big name browsers just yet. It's completely free with no in-app purchases. There are ads, though.
HQ Trivia is a hit quiz show game. It gained viral popularity on iOS and launched on Android New Years Eve. The game features 12 rounds of questions, a live host, and actual, for real cash prizes. The game filters out all of the live participants and those left after 12 rounds split the winnings. We're not sure how the game pays for the prizes. However, many theories include product placement, partners, ads, and venture capital money. In any case, the game is entirely free with no in-app purchases.
