Android Oreo now available for the Moto X4 Android One edition

When the Android One edition of the Moto X4 was made available, it was promised that the phone would receive timely updates. After all, that seems to be part of the point of the Android One program. Thankfully, with a week to go until we land in January, the phone received its Android Oreo update.

Spotted by Android Police, the Moto X4’s Oreo update includes all the features you expect from it, such as autofill and picture-in-picture mode. According to folks receiving the update, it weighs in at just over 1 GB and is currently rolling out, so make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and don’t fret if you don’t see it yet.

There are a few things of note, the first being that the patch level is December 1, not December 5. That’s a curious decision, particularly since the December 5 patch introduces security fixes that are not available in the December 1 patch.

Also, we do not know if the update includes support for Project Treble. Without going too deep in the rabbit hole, Project Treble changes the underlying software to theoretically allow for more timely Android updates. According to Google, phones that run Android Oreo out of the box will support Project Treble, but the support is not guaranteed for phones going from Nougat to Oreo.

Finally, the Oreo update is only rolling out to the Android One edition of the phone. We’re making note of this because there are separate versions of the Moto X4 available with Amazon ads and available through numerous retailers. Motorola has been known to push out updates in an untimely fashion, so don’t expect those versions to be as lucky with their Oreo updates.

This makes the Moto X4 one of the better options out there, so far as you’re okay with Project Fi. The phone features a 5.2-inch, Full HD display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and dual rear cameras. With decent specifications, a $400 price tag, and Android Oreo, the Moto X4 Android One edition just became a more compelling option for those looking for stock Android in a decently-priced package.
