Update, May 6: Defeat the Overseer in Neon Chrome, keep Willy alive in Penarium, and build your dream city in City Mania!
Neon Chrome
The biggest Android release of the past week is Neon Chrome. It's a top-down twin-stick shooter with super stylized visuals and procedurally generated levels. Released around this time last year on Steam and then later for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it has finally been ported to Android and is available for $9.99 from the Google Play Store.
This is a really polished game that's designed to be replayed over and over again. Each play through is going to present unique challenges and weapons, as you work your way through the compound on your quest to bring down the Overseer. Nearly everything you see is destroyable and full of loot, which you can use to upgrade your character
If you're a fan of games with neon-futuristic cyberpunk aesthetics like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, you are in for a treat with Neon Chrome. The game is super deep with upgrades and is just a blast to play, though you're in for a real challenge here. If you need more convincing, check out Windows Central's review of the game for the Xbox One.
Penarium
Penarium was initially released on PC back in 2015, but has finally found its way to the Google Play Store. It was published by Team 17, who you probably remember best from The Escapists or the Worms franchise. Their latest game is a 2D action platformer that features all the same familiar cartoonish violence you'd expect.
It tells the tale of a Willy, a portly farm boy who's always longed for adventure. One day, a circus show rolls into town and Willy decides to run away for a bit of fun and excitement. But unfortunately, this was no ordinary circus… it was Penarium, the sadistic circus extravaganza!
Willy's the next contestant in their twisted carnival game, where the goal is to smashing the barrels while dodging all sorts of devious traps and weaponry. This game was originally released on Steam, but the gameplay is ideal for mobile devices. The platforming action here is really tight, with a rotating variety of traps and weapons keeping things fresh. The graphics are beautiful without ever affecting the gameplay performance, and blends with the soundtrack to create a really polished experience. Touch screen controls are often hit or miss, but I think they work really well here as an homage to the simple penny arcades of the era. The platforming action here is really tight, and the graphics are beautiful without ever affecting the gameplay performance.
There's two game modes to play: Campaign mode which lets you unlock additional arenas and is the "story mode" so to speak, and Arcade mode which challenges you to survive for as long as you can collecting coins which you can spend on upgrades. It's a great game for quick casual sessions that offers a great challenge. It's a paid app as well, so there's no ads or in-app purchases to distract you.
City Mania
City Mania is a new game for fans of Sim City developed by the mobile gaming juggernauts at Gameloft. This open-ended city building game lets you design, build, and expand town from a tiny bedroom community to a sprawling super city complete with skyscrapers and famous landmarks.
Before I jump into the gameplay, I just got to say that this game looks great. Everything is rendered in colorful 3D and plays really smoothly on the Pixel. You occasionally get a chance to interact with your city's citizens, who are animated in a fun, cartoony style and given unique personalities.
Building is based around idle gameplay where you wait for factories and stores to generate supplies for you, so you can continue to upgrade and expand the buildings in your town. There's a lot of collecting to be done and strategic building, as you must ensure that all buildings have access to city services to keep your citizens happy. There are in-app purchases available, but if you're patient and check back in with the game every so often they're not necessary.
