Subterfuge

Dive into some of the deepest strategy gaming you'll find on mobile with Subterfuge, a week-long multiplayer game that puts you in command of an underwater nation. Using your fleets of subs, you must use strategy and diplomacy take control of remote outposts, expand your territory and defeat your enemies… all in real time!

AC reader unuzerounu recommended this game in the comments, stating they play it religiously. After playing through the tactical puzzles that act as a tutorial for the game, I can definitely see why this game was so well received when it first launched released back in 2015. There's a great amount of depth here that is sure to appeal to fans of board games that require teamwork and strategy, and everything is laid out in a clear and well-designed interface.

Subterfuge is Games are played out over a full week as players race to accumulate 200 kilos of Neptunium. You use drillers and specialists to take over enemies outposts via attacks, which can be set up hours in advance. While that might sound like a big commitment (and you will need to be fully engaged in all aspects of the game to be victorious), the game is flexible enough to accommodate short 5 minute check-ins to see the latest update in the game or longer 45 minute strategy sessions with other players as you plot your next move.

If you want to read up more on how the game is played, the official website features tutorial videos, the official rulebook, as well as the forums where you can pick up strategy from long-time players.

You have the option of setting up a game amongst friends or against random online opponents. Each player is able to communicated with one another in game for diplomacy purposes — make alliances, scope for intel, or send out misinformation to deceive your opponents and gain the upper hand. But obviously this game is ideally played amongst folks you know, so that the inevitable deceit cuts that much deeper.

You'll need to be a master of both strategy and diplomacy with your allies to win. Do you have what it takes?

Hearthstone

Hearthstone has been mentioned by a number of commenters, which I guess really speaks to the staying power this game has maintained. Based on Blizzard's Warcraft lore, Hearthstone is a digital card game where you build your deck and hone your skills against computer-controlled heroes from the Warcraft universe.

Once you're confident with your deck and strategies, it's time to take your game to the Arena and battle against other real players. Now, if you're just getting into the game it may take a while to build up your decks before you're competitive against players who have spent time (and money) building their decks. And that is the reality of playing Hearthstone in 2017 — frequent expansions show that Blizzard is keen on supporting the 50 million monthly players with new content, but you need to buy into those expansions which might turn off casual players who aren't compelled to invest in the game.

The latest expansion, Journey to Un'Goro, was just released on April 6 and includes 135 new cards, new game dynamics and freaking dinosaurs. Check it out!
