Unless you happen to live in China, there’s a fair chance you might not have heard of UMIDIGI, a company formerly known as UMi. However, if you like getting high-end features at a killer price, the rising brand is worth taking notice of.
The latest member of the UMIDIGI family is the new UMIDIGI Z Pro. Essentially an upgraded version of the UMi Z, the new Pro model places a pretty big focus on camera technology. So what makes the new camera tech stand out? First on the hardware front, we find a dual rear-facing setup with two 13MP Sony IMX 258 sensors handling the load — which are assisted by laser and phase-detection auto-focus.
One sensor is responsible for RGB, the other for handling monochrome. The end result is truly nice photos that are competitive to what you’d find on a more expensive handset. Even selfie fans have a lot to love, thanks to the 13MP front camera (an unspecified Samsung sensor) that includes a soft light to aid in night time selfies.
That’s far from all that UMIDIGI brings to the table though. Interestingly enough, the company also reportedly offers 2x optical zoom. Looking at the pics it’s hard to see exactly how that is achieved, but we’ll share more details on that as we learn more.

Moving past hardware, the the Z Pro also offers several software features that help take photos to a whole new level. Not only is there a DSLR-like bokeh simulated effect, the camera software even includes its own take on Live Photos. For those that follow along with the iPhone crowd, you might have heard of this functionality. Basically it lets you bring your photos to life by creating a moving image. This has previously been largely contained to only iOS devices and a very select few other phones, so it’s nice to see it make the move over to Android via UMIDIGI.

The best part about the handset is that all these camera features can be yours for just $299, or $250 if you pre-sale and are among the first to buy. That’s a pretty low cost for live photos, bokeh effect, a manual mode, and a truly solid dual 13MP camera configuration. But the camera really doesn’t matter if the rest of the specs aren’t good enough right? Don’t worry, the Z Pro does pretty well here too.
Like the original UMi Z, we get a device powered by a 2.6GHz deca-core MediaTek Helio SoC that’s backed up by 4GB RAM and a 32GB of internal eMMC 5.1 memory. There’s also a 5.5-2inch 1080p display and a sizable 3780 mAh battery that should easily make it through a whole day. All this is encased in a premium metallic package.
If you are looking for a phone with solid specs, an emphasis on photos, and don’t mind giving a less familiar brand a chance the UMIDIGI Z Pro is certainly worth a look. Right now you can pre-order it for $250 with shipping expected to hit on March 20th. Keep in mind that if you wait until after that to buy it, you will be paying the full $299 price.
