Update February 10: Heart Star, Dubspace, and unWorded are three new games for Android that are very worthy of your attention!

unWorded

Having received acclaim and recognition at festival and gaming contests around the world, the award-winning narrative-driven puzzler unWorded has finally come to Android.

More art project than game, unWorded is an ode to typography and storytelling, as play within the mind of a writer stuck in a hospital bed. As the bedridden writer revisits his old stories as read to him by his daughter, you solve puzzles by first deciphering clues from the passages, then creating objects from assorted letters and punctuation. This is a highly stylized and cerebral game that delivers plot development unlike any other game you'll play. In essence, unWorded plays like you're watching a short film, tasking you with creating the accompanying imagery for the narrator.

This game was designed and developed by a two-man team from Lyon, France, and it's well worth the price of admission for anyone who enjoys great design, typography, and great storytelling.

Heart Star

With its lovey-dovey concept and uber-cute graphics, it's very fitting that Heart Star landed in the Google Play Store on Valentine's Day. The game features retro graphics and music, with a simple game mechanic that is tested and explored through 50 puzzling levels.

You simultaneously control both characters on screen, switching between their pink and blue worlds to navigate each through increasingly challenging platform levels. It's all about using one sprite to help the other progress through the level, adorable art style might feel too kiddy for 'mature' gamers, the core gameplay here is easy to pick up and play, yet increasingly challenging as you progress through the game.

It's free to play, with ads only popping up occasionally after you've completed a level, or if one of you let one of your characters fall off a platform. So don't fail and your gaming experience will barely be interrupted.

Dubspace

Sometimes you just have to appreciate a game that cuts right to the point, forgoing story or character development and just going for pure action instead. In Dubspace, you play as a character floating in zero-gravity with a weapon and wave after wave of aliens and robots. Levels are randomly generated with different features that add to the game's difficulty.

You use your gun to shoot enemies as well as move around the arena, so a large part of the game comes down to smart ammo management. You only get three hearts per level, and when you run out the entire space station is jettisoned into space. The random levels and rapid fire gameplay makes Dubspace a great casual game with a collectable element to unlock new characters. You start off as Mailcom, a Rastafarian astro-soldier with a shotgun, but fallen enemies drop loot (in the form of floppy disks — did I mention this game is deliciously retro?) which you collect to unlock the nine other characters and weapon types.

It's a challenging game that's essentially ad-free, unless you want to try your hand in the Loot Level — watch a quick ad and then get a minute to dodge space junk and collect as much loot as you can.
