What is Kodi?
Kodi is an open source media center that can be used to watch live TV, play videos/music, view pictures, and play games. Since it’s an open source media center, there is no app store, no licensing, and no restrictions. The community can just develop whatever it likes.
Kodi is one of the best ways to stream live TV to your Smart TV. Kodi has developed a reputation in recent years for being a refuge for pirates, however, though, there are lots of legally-available content.
It’s actually very easy to install Kodi on most OS platforms since there are easy-to-install versions of the app for Windows, OS X, Linux, and Android. Unluckily, the installation process on iOS isn’t easy as it is on Windows or OS X. However you can do that easily without even jailbreaking your iOS.
So we are going to explain how to install Kodi on iOS without jailbreaking your phone.
Things You’ll Need
You’ll have to get some things ready before you start the installing process since you won’t be jailbreaking your device.
You’ll need to be running on OS X 10.9 or higher on your Mac. This can only work on Mac computers.
You need to have Xcode 7 on your Mac. This is a free Apple software that allows developers to create applications.
You need to download the Kodi DEB File. This is available on the Kodi website.
You also need to have iOS App Signer installed on your Mac. iOS Signer App is a free open source software that changes a DEB file to an IPA file.
The last thing is you need to have your Apple ID set up. Am very sure you have it set up already since you are not newbie in Mac or iOS device. You can of course create an account before you start if you don’t have one set up already.
Ensure you download and install all the necessary software mentioned above before you proceed.
Step 1: Connecting Your Apple ID to Xcode 7
The first thing you need to do is to connect your Apple ID to your Xcode app.
Open the Xcode app once you’ve downloaded and have it installed. Xcode might prompt you to install some extra updates before opening up for the first time. So head to Xcode > Preferences > Accounts once you’re on the main screen. Then click on the + icon and select “Add Apple ID”. Type in your Apple ID details and click on Sign In.
By doing this, your Apple ID will be changed automatically into a free developer account.
Step 2: Creating a Project
The next thing to do is to create a project in the Xcode app which will let you to import the KODI DEB file inside it. Now connect the iOS device you want to install Kodi on to your Mac via USB before we proceed.
Now click on “Create a New Xcode Project” from Xcode’s main screen.
You’ll see a list of templates that you could choose from. Select Single View Application.
Then Xcode will prompt you to enter the details about your new project. Beneathe the Product Name, enter Kodi and choose something exclusive for your Organization Identifier. Then select your team from the drop-down menu and ensure you set the Language to Swift.
Click on Next once you are true and select a location for your Git repository.
Now you might see a warning about provisioning profiles on the next screen. Just click on “Fix Issue” button to resolve the problem.
Step 3: Signing Your Code
You’ll need to “re-sign” it since we’ll be using the jailbroken version of the DEB file. So open the App Signer software once you’ve downloaded it and have it installed.
Below the File heading, select the DEB file you downloaded from the Kodi website.
Now select the newly-created developer account from the drop-down menu for Signing Certificate.
Then click on the drop-down menu and select your app in the Provisioning Profile.
Then enter a suitable name for your app.
Then leave the New Application ID field blank.
Now click on “Start” once everything is set up and let the app work its magic. By doing this, you’ll now have a newly-signed IPA file that can be installed on your device using the Xcode app.
Step 4: Installing the App
Now navigate back to the Xcode to start the installation process.
So select the device you want to install the app on. Navigate to Window > Devices and select your device from the list displayed at the left-side panel. In case your iOS device is connected into your computer, you should be able to see it in list displayed.
So once you have your device selected, click on the + icon beneath the Installed Apps and select the file you just created in the App Signer.
Then Xcode will transfer the app to your device. From there, you’ll be able to see a progress bar at the top of the screen. Depending on file size, the transfer can take a long time, so be patient for it tio transfer.
Once the transfer process has finished successfully, disconnect your device from your Mac.
Step 5: Authorizing Yourself as a Developer
The transferred app can be seen on your iOS device home screen and you’ll need to make yourself a trusted developer on your device before you open it.
So head to Settings > General > Profiles > Device Management.
Then click on your developer profile. You should see a Kodi app listed along with an “Unverified” warning notification. So tap on “Trust”, then the app will change to “Verified”.
That’s all. You can launch the Kodi app and use it smoothly on your iPhone/iPad. From there you can start streaming your favorite TV shows, videos and so on.
How to Change the Kodi App’s Interface
If you’re a core and guru Kodi user, you’ll notice that the interface is different from the desktop version; and it appears that there’s no way to install ZIP files and add repos to your app.
So you can only change the Kodi’s skin to solve the issue. So click on the Settings icon at the bottom-right corner and navigate to Appearance > Skin.
Then swap it from “Re-touched” to “Confluence”. Confluence skin is the Kodi’s default skin that you usually see on desktop versions.
In case you want to add ZIP files and repos in Kodi, just head to System and click on Add-Ons.
